What do you consider an acceptible frame rate for games?

I just upgraded my video card and have restarted the effort at tweaking the in-game video settings to get the best appearance to FPS tradeoff. What do you consider an acceptible framerate for a first person shooter, a real time strategy game, and a RPG?

I have been guessing

Shooter: 60 FPS
RT Strategy: 45 FPS
RPG: 40 FPS

Just my guesses. I think a shooter probably benefits the most from high rates.

FPS: >60 (>80 is ideal for the smoothness, >100=perfect)
RTS: >30-40 (for example, Medieval 2: TW was very playable at 30fps, very smooth)
RPG >50

I'm not too picky about it but I do like smoothness.

FPS: 30-60 (varies on game type UT higher, OFP is perfect at 30 ish)
RTS: 25-30 (I have yet to play an RTS that isn't smooth until you hit 40fps)
RPG: 20-40 (again depends on the game, Oblivion is better at 30+ but Baldurs Gate is fine around 20)

All min frame rates of course, don't want max of 30 & min of 10 cos that would be bad.

60+fps for shooters and racing games. I'll accept lower for anything else though once it goes sub 20 I'll just have to lower settings or something.

LOL

I get an average of 40 FPS in most FPS games I play. I don't think that's too bad but then again, I've never been able to play something with 70+ FPS (unless I put the resolution at 640x480 with low details). I can't wait until I order some new stuff. 😀

I'm too cheap to upgrade from my 9200 and thus have to accept low framerates as a way of life.

3D Action-FPS: <25 FPS
2.5D Action-FPS: <10 FPS
3D RPG/FPS: <15 FPS
2.5D RPG/FPS: <10 FPS
RTS: <10 FPS
Action-RPG: <20 FPS
Pure-RPG: <15 FPS

FPS > 40fps and above
RPG > 30fps and above
RTS > 50fps and above (I love ultra fast scrolling, cause i'm not a hotkey kinda guy)

RPG - 20-30 is fine
FPS - I'm used to low framerates, so 40+ is great
RTS - uhm. maybe 30?

It sounds like everone is in a similar ball park. I have been getting 50-60 on FPS and that seems to work fine.

FPS: >50, ideally 60 (refresh rate) w/ Vsync
RPG: >40-45 FPS?
RTS: >35 FPS?

Anything over 30fps appears fine. after all, television is less than that and have you ever thought tv was jerky?

Film (24 fps) looks jerky to my eyes. TV, not so much, because your eyes see it as 60 Hz (60 half-frames that get blended together, that is).

Nothing under 50, more like 60 plus... I don't understand how people play at 35FPS with the graphics turned way up.

This is shooters of course. I could play final fantasy or something at 10FPS and it wouldn't matter.

60+ for anything other than RTS. Even on RTS, more FPS = smoother mouse movement, so sometimes FPS is essential for RTS (though not as demanding as FPS).

For driving, anything below 60 is no-go for me. Even @ 60 FPS, it doesn't feel right. RPG is also same rule as RTS, as long as mouse movement is smooth, no problem-o

I loved getting 99fps (200 or 400 w/o cap) in cs 1.6 that was ownage now css came alon, rolling at measly 40-60 fps, its fine most of teh time.

Shooter- 30-60fps is fine as long as it can hold it and not stutter in heavy battle.
RTS- 20-30fps is fine when zoomed out.
RPG- 30-40fps

Are these averages? I don't care about the averages but like to have it over 60 at almost all times in singleplayer FPSs. If it falls below 60 more than once, I drop some settings down and see if things improve any. In multiplayer FPSs, I'm not paying much attention to the graphics anyway and tend to turn down a lot of settings until the framerate is always over about 100.

As for RTSs, I am not sure. I haven't played any in quite some time.

You sound like my brother. His cheapness owns a 9000 and has no intention of upgrading any time soon. He has to run real messed up settings in most games but he would rather spend his money on beer than a videocard.

I like to have the framerates as high as possible. I like a minimum of 60FPS in shooters and racing games. Minimum framerate is the key.

I get insane framerates right now with a C2D and a 7900GS. Like 400FPS in Quake3 at maximum settings at the highest resolution my monitor can handle. 😀

30fps is the bare minimum. unfortunately, the nfs games are locked in at around 30-40 fps, so i cant really complain or do anything about it.

but for every other game, it HAS to be at 60fps. no exceptions.

for FPS - 30 min.

RTS/RPG - ~30ish, since these games are slower, they dont really require a very high minimum framerate (though higher always helps 🙂)

lol...you guys are such a load of dorks

FPS...30fps average not dipping below 20 is fine by me. low fps isnt a hassle, chugging down in new scenes is.

i usually target for 40, though.

had 10fps with oblivion, 3 in new areas

The human eye has a hard time processing data faster than 30-35 Hz.

There is nothing accomplished by trying to draw data on the screen that is going to be redrawn before the human eye can process it.
