What do you charge people who insist on paying for PC Services?

Just out of curiousity...

Went over a friend of a friends who was having some issues after installing the latest NAV. It was a Dell from a few years ago, and really just needed a little bit of cleanup. Took about an hour and a half of my time, but it was really no big dael. Made 50 bucks out of the deal, but I was wondering what's a good range to charge on stuff like this?

I think there was a thread on this a month or two ago, but I'm not sure 😱

So yeah...Opinions?

first, find out how much theyre making overall, factor in how expensive the computer was, and how little they know about computers. dont forget gullibility.

Now that I'm not in business anymore, it's strictly up to the person who is paying. The few old customers that I go help out when I'm back in town (where I used to live/work) pay very well. Better than I ever charged before.

When I was in business, I'd charge friends 20/hr and businesses 40/hr (unless they were a real pain in the butt customers, then they'd get charged 50-60/hr.) Close family members were/are free.

Home users 86.00 Per hour 1 hour min.
Biz start at 110 for basic stuff up to 165 for network diag.

Dont forget about the calls you will get at 11pm on a saturday night saying "My internet isnt working; I forgot my password' etc....". You have to factor that in as well. Also when a component goes bad 2 years from now, they will expect you to replace it. Just something to remember. I would agree that $35-$50 an hr is good if above isnt an issue with you.

I charge anyone who is not family $40 an hour. I don't need the money, it's simply to keep the requests down.

It's amazing how many people start calling you for help when they find you are a computer geek.

Make sure you tell them the work is as-is or else you have just volunteered to be their helpdesk for the life of their computer.

Depends on how much they make

Ah yes! I tell everyone that the computer was fully functional when it left my house and ther is NO warranty.

I learned this fast as people would take them home and promptly get the same viruses and spyware, then try to blame me.

I charge $75 an hour (see sig) and have plenty of business from it. Some people I do it at their house, and some I take their pc with me and return it a day or so later.

Some of my longstanding customers who gives me lots of references get charged $50 an hour; first time I do work for someone I also charge $50 an hour, (and I show the deduction on their invoice so they see they got a discount) and tape about 10 business cards to their pc's. It's good cheap advertising

I picked up a flyer from a local PC repair shop and undercut them by 25-50%. They want $35 to install new RAM... I'll happily do it for $20 😉... they want $50 for installing new PCI devices... I'll do it for $25.

I do things free for family and close friends and they usually just buy me dinner or something. Which is plenty fine with me, because most of them will refer their friends to me who are happy to pay me.

If there is someone I don't want to deal with or something I don't want to do for a person, I'll just tell them that I'm really busy right now and that I can take their computer and get to it on my time... which may take up to a month, or refer them to the PC repair shop I got the flyer from.

They know me at the aforementioned place... it's a smaller place but they always tell me that they have more work than they can handle. I always get discounts on the stuff they are selling and I think they are happy to have to deal with a few less stupid things.... kinda funny but oh well.

Cool.

I like the sounds of ~35-40 an hour.

But it's still something that's up for consideration...Gotta see about working out some terms or some sort of agreement...🙂
