ok i want to get a new drive, but i don't want to buy an external drive (its a CDRW), i know you can get those external housings for internal drives, that can hook up via USB or via some COM port.
anybody know what they're called, where i can get them for cheap and how much they cost?

You'll max out at 4X burn speed if you use USB. The external housings with the USB interface cost about $90. I have a link somewhere - give me a bit to find it.
