What do you call it when you're at the store waiting behind other people?

In line or in a queue.

I prefer using 'line' because (for me) a queue implies some sense of formal order.

I call it...

"Maybe the two attendants at the "self serve" checkouts could open a couple of other registers instead?"

That's the type of thing that makes me want to shop at stores that have adequate staff working in them.

i hate waiting in lines, if i have to wait more than a minute its just not worth it. im the kind of dude that, if people arent checking out fast enough, will say something like "lets hurry up folks"/"could you guys please stop chatting, some of us need to get outta here"/"ok people lets hurry up" the minute i get in line

Anger time.

Actually here in IN, its rare if I don't walk right up to the cashier, or self checkout. Also commonly get first row parking. Shit never happened in L.A., hated going to any store.

My coworker, who is also from SoCal, was telling me when he went to get his IN license, he was the only person there besides employees. What a difference, when I got my CA license renewed last the line was wrapped around the building 45min before opening.

The judges were looking for "on line."

Where did this come from? I don't understand why people say "on line" instead of "in line". Unless there is a literal line on the floor and you're standing on it, shouldn't it be waiting IN line?
