What do you call it when you can work under one company, but at different store locations?

My friend who works at Starbucks told me that she can transfer her hours to any other Starbucks, whether it is local or distant. What exactly is this called? And are there any other companies that do this?

My reason for asking this is as follows: I go to school about an hour away from my home. I have a good, solid job that i can count on during the school year, but the problem is that i'm usually without a job in the summer when i'm back at home. Coupled with the fact that most employers don't seem too eager to hire someone for two months, i be screwed.

It's not really transferring, because you could work at whichever location you want, whether it's for just a week, month, or year.

I know the payroll people in the company I work for call it "borrowed hours", the people that go from store to store and do not have a set store are called floaters and/or extra boards.
