What do you all do for car repair or diagnosis?

Ive got a weird noise going on in my truck and I am not sure where I want to take it in. Im afraid to go to the dealership for the sake of being ripped off but they would know the truck the best wouldnt they? What if I just want to know what the problem is, can I just get it diagnosed and what kind of cost is that roughly? WHo would be the best for just diagnosing?

i diagnose myself, and if I can't figure it out, I use an online resource. There are tons of web forums now for almost every type of car out there.

I belong to one for my truck but noone there has any clue. Its hard to diagnose noises.

Find a good reputable independent mechanic. I do a lot of my own work, but when there's something that's out of my skill level, there's a shop in town I take stuff to.

will they just take a look at it and tell you what is wrong and then you can fix it yourself if you choose?

You'll still have to pay for their time to diagnose it, but yeah, it's not like they can fix it without your consent and then bill you for it. The same thing is true for a dealership, but their rates are going to be higher.

Thats kind of what I figured. I know its sounds like a trivial question and common sense would make the most sense but I just wanted to be sure before i took it somewhere. The problem is the sound only shows up once I hit like 35mph.
