What do we need in our autoexec.bat and Config.sys under Win98SE?

I have DEVICEs......himem.sys and EMM386.exe in my config.sys and nothing in autoexec.bat

Would adding more FILES or BUFFERS give better performance when using explorer to copy files, Or when using a backup program?

I'm trying to copy 3 GB of mp3 files between hard drives and both explorer and my backup program are choking and taking frigging forever.

In Win98 SE you should not have those files config.sys or autoexec.bat. They are not needed. Your slow operating is probably due to emm386.exe is being loaded twice. Not a good idea. It is loading once in your config.sys file and Win98 SE is loading its own same file.

Rename your config.sys and autoex.bat files so they will not execute and see if your system runs better and faster without those delays you are experiencing after you reboot.

You must be an old DOS user person or you would not know about config.sys or autoexec.bat. New Windows users know nothing about those files. Many of them do not even know there is a DOS window you can open up. If they did open it they would not know what to do. ;)

Like JohnLog says . . . nothing! Unless you are running legacy DOS programs or games, there is no need at all for those configuration files in any version of Windows from 95 on.

Sometimes Soundblaster puts them in by default, but that is because they have some compelling need to have sound in old DOS games. They can be deleted or renamed.

I removed those lines in config.sys and autoexec.bat....I didn't put them there...yep, I think Soundblaster did it.

anyways, no improvement .....I still have a real throughput problem problem. Only thing I can figure is that I am copying using explorer from an older 3.2 GB hard drive that's almost full into my Maxtor 60GB.

I tried using a couple of backup programs and they choked too.

I wonder if I will have the same problem if I copy them to CD first and then copy them to my hard drive?

How about making an image with Drive pro? I think you need to restore an image to a separate drive tho.

Yea, I'm an "old DOS person"....I built my first IBM PC in 1984 (anyone remember PC Designs?). Sometimes I still go directly to the DOS prompt for some things I can do faster from there.

Nexialist,

I bought my first computer in March 1985 which was a Sanyo 555-2 highly optimized version called the Silver Fox. I still have that old computer and it runs as good as new with its original 12 inch Taxan CGA monitor. I run the Sanyo 555-2 PC every few months so I can remember how it was when that was my only computer and I was so happy to have it. It had one expansion slot and I added a CGA card for it. Turned it into a decent computer in IBM mode. I am an old dos-aholic since then. Still like working a bit in the DOS window in ME. Also added a speed upgrade from 3.5 MHz to 7.2 MHz to the Sanyo. A real speed demon for its day. :)

johnlog,

CGA cards! You could count the pixels...and go blind. Then I bought an ATI "all in wonder" card that gave me good hercules graphics and legible text. Those guys have been putting out good stuff since day 1.

Bought my first 20 MB Seagate hard drive at the Pomona swap meet for $330. I was really living then!

I have in my garage an original IBM XT with a 10 mb hard drive, original monitor. etc. My school was trashing it and I rescued it. It's a keeper.

Ah, the old days....don't miss them at all.

Why I bought the taxan CGA monitor as its screen was superior to most other monitors in 1985. Plus it was a CGA color monitor and I ran it always in color mode. If I had to use a monochrome monitor I might have given up computing then and there. Probably end up playing tiddly winks or something like that.

I bought my third computer at the Pomona Computer Show a loong time ago.

After I bought my firest Windows 3.0 computer within six months DOS was history.
