i installed an x-fi but when i ran Half Life 2 the game choked (poor frame rates), C & C Generals rendered a black screen & my bro's Harry Potter game refused to run. i tried tweaking around & finally when i downloaded & installed Nvidia's latest Nforce drivers, everything ran smoothly. i'm perplexed. what do video drivers have anything to do with the soundcard?

Forceware actually comes in different flavors. It can be video forcerware, audio forceware or the MCP forceware which includes the whole shebang. The MCP is a platform forceware which updates the ide controllers, gart (graphics),SMB, audio and also ethernet controllers. So it's not just the audio driver. You might want to check the forceware you downloaded. But as far as your basic question on what the video drivers has to do with the soundcard, nothing except maybe affect how much cpu resources is used each one.
