i love it. great adjustability, and the panel itself is spectacular. i would wait for dell to put it on sale--i got mine for $411

i have it and think it's kind of overrated for gaming. if you're gonna play something like cs then you'll have a real tough time seeing things in dark areas. i know two other people with this monitor who agree completely. that being said, there's probably not anything better in this price range with a 16ms response time. if anyone does know an lcd with better colors, and brightness levels, then please post your opinion.

I think it is an incredible monitor. If you do a lot of typing or coding, being able to go to portrait mode is so helpful. When gaming, you do have to mess with gammas and such, but that is really simple if you have powerstrup installed. I know some visual fanatics will argue with this, but I don't see ghosting. If it is there, it doesn't bother me, and I have tried to make it so. I flew around Wake Island on battlefield at full speed very low to the ground, and the images were just fine.

There are a number of displays that share the same AUO 17" 16ms panel and have DVI. If you don't want DVI, then there are even more to choose from. At native resolution, the backlight is likely the primary difference to image quality so don't believe Hitachi's claimed greater viewing angle but some will be brighter than others and different hardware gutsies can effect the image too, particularly with scaling. Otherwise it mostly comes down to additional features.

Hitachi CML174/5 - (/5 has integrated speakers), low retail price in lieu of Dell deals on above models, dimmer backlight, limited adjustment, "black" model is grey, also avail. white, made by Compal

The first three can prolly be had for about $400 final cost from Dell today. But such sales have been frequent and are likely to repeat though the end of the year at least.
As for the Planar specifically, PC Magazine says:
"On our DisplayMate tests, the unit had trouble displaying close to 10 percent of the shades at either end of the gray scale. The unit suffered from marked jitter during our pixel phase test, and it failed to display subtle shades on our low-saturation color test.
Predictably, the unit also had a few problems with digital photos. Backgrounds seemed oversaturated with color, and we couldn't always see details in shadows. The Planar LCD's bezel is a dream, but its screen is a different matter."
Now, how much of that is specific to the Planar model versus any with the same panel is difficult to guess. Personally, I think the Planar's best features are replacement warranty and pivot. But the bezel is not the slimmest and I don't like the speakers (particularly bad when in portrait mode), lack of cable guide, and (getting picky now), the "cheesy" big logo. I have been considering these for awhile myself and it sure ain't an easy decision when there is not one that firmly stands out above the rest and especially as new stuff is always just around the corner.

Hey could someone clarify LCD screen sizes for me please 🙂 If you buy say a 15" LCD it's a true 15" diagonal right? But it's not like having a 17" CRT monitor, at best it would have about 1" larger screen size over the CRTs since CRTs have the large plastic casing which knocks off about 1" to the screen size correct?
