What do they serve at a japanese restaurant?

Mexican food. Don't you know anything? 😉

I've never been to Japanese restaurant so I'm not sure what they serve. I'm sure you could find a site for one and check out the menu.

No luck on google with that.

you can just get terriyaki chicken or beef, some tempura and rice. that's very tame.

if you want to try cooked sushi, you can get california rolls. everything in there is cooked or a vegetable.

you can get yakisoba, which is japanese chow mein. i also like sukiyaki, which is a big boiling bowl of noodles in a heavy sauce (don't drink the sauce.) if it's a shabu shabu place, you pick the meat you want and cook it yourself.

i LOVE kabuki - we used to go all the time but we moved further out from the one we like. we're close to the one in hollywood but it's not as good as the one in west LA/culver city/en route to the airport.

So what do you recommend? I like most chinese, and cooked fish.

I  sushi, and good beginner sushi would be California rolls or some type of tempura sushi (something like shrimp tempura). Otherwise, the teriyaki is probably my favorite. I find tempura to be a little bland.

to say noodle in japanese you just say
?? (???) (udon wheat, large noodles)
? (??) (men, standard noodles)
?? (??) (soba buckwheat/ usually cold noodles)

Japanese food is very good. Though a lot of people can recommend, not everybody has the same taste. Teriyaki beef/chicken has never failed most people though, it has a great taste.

Be sure to try natto maki.

What is that? I don't trust you. 😕

Fermented soy beans wrapped in rice and seaweed. I order it almost everytime I take someone new to mess with them. It is, to put it mildly, an acquired taste. One time when I ordered it for everyone, the waitress took the order, but came back and asked me if I was sure. Haha. It's not that bad, really.
