I have an old microphone with the 'huge' jack end. I want an adapter so that it will plug into a 'normal' microphone jack present on modern computers. I know there is buzz words for this stuff - but am at a loss of the exact sizes etc.

Monoprice uses the mm format but it may also be listed as 1/8" to 1/4" or 3.5mm to 1/4" adapter.

You need an Female XLR to 3.5mm male cable. Monoprice is your friend.

Normal? The 1/4" plug you have is normal, the newer 1/8" is not. It is all a matter of perspective.

1/4" to mini-jack adapter.

If its a pro mic you will need a XLR to 1/4" adaptor, If its a home mic its probably 1/4" and you need to convert that to 1/8" with an adaptor.
