What do the specs for a mini-stereo system mean?

I just purchased an Audiovox 150 watt mini-home stereo system. It sounds like crap.

What are the specifications that I should be looking for and what do they mean?

The only thing I am familiar with is the output watts. 80 - 100 watts is enough for me. But what does the "ohms" stamped on the back of the speakers mean?

Also, what is a respectable range for THD (Total Harmonic Distortion)?

What about the frequency response range? What range is good here?

If you have any suggestions on brand/model for me, please list it.

I'd prefer to spend under $150. This is only for a medium sized room...I don't need to blow the roof off.

Can't say much about THD as some people just can't hear noise.

Human hearing is ~20Hz<hearing<~20kHz. Wider is better.
 
Generally THD below 1% is inaudible, although with a mini system specs don't matter. Chances are the speakers are so poor that any differences in the source equipment are meaningless.

Yes, at a normal volume level it just sounds 'flat'.

I also have a 40 watt AIWA system that I bought a few years ago and when I put them side-by-side, for comparison, the Audiovox white noise is even more evident.

I've seen him say thanks at the end of a post here and there. Just giving the devil his due. Not thrilled with his modus aperandi, though.
 
You bought an Audiovox what are you expecting ?

You shoudl have purchased a Denon or something, those are not too bad.
 
I had a sinking feeling that buying an Audiovox was a major part of the problem. I think I'm gonna return it and buy an RCA model that they have. Heck, I couldn't even get the Audiovox to work with my learnable remote control.
