What do people in the advertising business do?

Before I get into this here is a little background; I am currently in college getting my BS in computer engineering, going to graduate in a year; I am not really sure that this course of study is going to lead to what I want to do in the long run. I have a relative who started in Computer Science way back in the day (70s) and is now the head of her company's marketing department, so I know there are other areas that just the technical aspect.

This brings me the question on the topic of the thread... what exactly do people in the advertising business do? Advertising has always made me curious, whenever I see billboards or pictures of products I always have a thought as to how to make them more appealing or improve upon them. I know its not all about art and alot of the process is aiming the product at a certain demographic, which I think I have a good understanding of.

Anyway, if anyone out there is in the advertising business or has a technical degree and has gone into more a business side of the field let me know what your thoughts are on your current jobs and the advertising business as a whole; also any thoughts of where to look for a job or internship so I might get a taste for the industry.

My first post on the forums, be nice.

I have a degree in advertising and interned with an agency and it's tough as nails to get anywhere in the industry. I gave up the in getting a job in advertising in the meantime. If you're really interested you're gonna want to find a agency to intern at and really push to get a job within, which is pretty tough and competitive as it is. But careers in advertising range from ad sales, media sales, copyrighting, account management, creative (graphic design, video editing), it's a whole industry.
