Want to be liked by the world? Vote Obama.

In all fairness, we were hated before Bush and although Obama is more popular in most places overseas, I doubt that will change.

I remember being told to wear a Canadian flag pin when visiting Europe like 10 years ago.

You were told to wear a Canadian flag? That must have been a joke, because we were loved by most of the (Western) world 10 years ago.

Americans are still liked in Europe, we're just seen as retards because we have a retarded president. If we elect McCain, we'll be seen as the single largest group of retards in the world.

Iraq, gitmo, patriot act, illigal wire tappings etc.

If your next president is a Republican you will never recover your reputation. The world with just think you're all too stupid to ever do anything right again.

8 years ago you would hard pressed to find someone who didn't think the US was a great country. Now, many people hate America. They don't hate American's, they just hate the things your goverment does.

EDIT: When Clinton came here last year he got something like $10,000 a table when he was going around giving speaches. When Bush is no longer in office he will not be able to come here.

YUp, pretty much.

Most other Nations would Cold Cock, kick in the Nads, then Knee the Face of the Republicans, and wouldn't even consider Voting for one again for a decade. There would be a few holdouts, but the majority wouldn't give them the time of day. It's quite dismaying to see how little thought goes into American Politics.

Your government: I think Americans should be ashamed of the man they put in office - TWICE. I'm dumbfounded that his approval ratings are still around the 30% mark. If you speak to 3 Americans, on average one of them will still think Bush is doing a good job. It's astounding.

Your politics are a massive joke. Most people I talk to around here (actually so far everyone) is flummoxed that about half of USA is considering voting in a 71-year old whose policies almost perfectly mirror those of Bush. Even worse, he chose a running mate based on a media stunt, not based on her ability to run the country (which, let's face it, isn't unlikely to happen).

However, having said that, American people are, in my experience, great. My sample size is small and America is enormously diverse so it's kind of a silly thing to say, but every American I have met has been pretty damn awesome.

Yeah I agree with this guy. American people are awesome period, regardless what anyone says ... I have lived and experienced it myself. I will defend all my Americans friends if anyone bad mouths them outside the U.S.
That said ... how in the world do they end up with this president..lol

Moroccan.
Americans are very nice, welcoming people. Very accepting society. I think an average American should be smarter than they are, I say this partially because they voted Bush in office and thinking about voting McCain. They also don't know the world map very well ...lol
However America as a country has many issues.
American football is awesome...c'mon its only on weekends for less than half a year.

You mean ATOT hasn't ruined your perceptions of Americans as people yet? Damn, gotta try harder.

My impression has been that most people do not like the American government and policies but are generally fine with Americans themselves. I've never thought twice about telling people I'm American and I never understood why I wouldn't.

They aren't too happy with our political leadership and foreign policy, but we're still up there in other areas. Third-world countries still think our streets are paved with gold as evidenced by Mexico and from what I've heard of people studying in places like Egypt and Vietnam. Also, our higher-education system is still pretty much considered the world's best. A person with an American degree is very well regarded in many other countries.

This! Despite the evolution/ID BS in your middle/high schools, your higher education institutes are the envy of the world, no doubt.

Please! Have you seen any international rankings of Universities, and other such Further Education?

I will have to dig up a link later, but there are schools in India that are as good as, if not better, than what the American schools offer, and have much higher entrance requirements.

Belgian,

We can't understand why you elect retards like Bush just like most Europeans don't understand why Italians elect a corrupt asshole like Berlusconi.
That being said, the USA is in my top 3 of countries that I like the most, I just don't like the politics of the last 8 years

I'm just back from a trip to San Francisco, and as always I had a good time

Did you at least report it to the police and post master? Mail theft, specifically us postal mail, is a federal crime. Somebody's stealing your mail. You should know better to report it by the 2nd time.

nostalgia blinds people.
the anti american hatred was going on before bush. the 9/11 hijacking was planned during clintons reign which kind of means the love fest didn't really exist ever. sh*t countries like france were trying to make moves to "counter balance" us, trying to undermine us even then. i guess they got what they wanted.

voting for people to be "loved" is a fools erand. love is fleeting undependable and worthless in the long run.

Say what you will about McCain, but he is far from "the same as Bush" -- yes, Obama is painting him that way, but in terms of foreign policy, despite the preening on both sides, the two aren't that different. McCain isn't a fundamentalist, nor is he a fool. Saying that you'd never forgive the US for electing someone from the same party as Bush is idiotic.

StarsFan4Life,

I'm an American living in Paris (I've also been spending a bit of time in Greece these days).

Most Europeans don't understand why we picked Bush in the first place and they do not understand how people in the states even can consider McCain an real option. I'd say the biggest thing they are not understanding about Americans is the fear we feel. Many Americans live in fear of the other world powers, other religions, other skin colors, and often find themselves voting Republican. Liberals are less afraid (much like of Europeans). This may sound nasty and all, but to be honest there are times when world powers should not be ignored, and there are times when religions can create a threat to others - this is a real strength of the conservative movement.

The racism thing may sound like total BS, but based on what I hear and the fact that I have republicans in my family from the middle of the US who have already made it clear they will not vote for a black man (not that they were not republicans already) - I'd say it's true in some cases.

Let me make another point clear, I was a McCain fan up till about 2 years ago when he sold his sole to get into the oval office. While I may not have agreed with his foreign policy stands back then, he stood up for a lot of other things I believed in. It's tough to explain to Europeans that there was this dichotomy in McCain.
