What do non-nerd types talk about?

So I am like many others out in the OT. I am an engineer type who is good at technical things. I am however not great at small talk. I can small talk with other engineers even the female variety, but CLA types aka attractive, are a different story. Typical engineer small talk would be like, "You hear the one about the physicist at the dairy company? After a month of research the physicist starts of his presentation with... "If we assume a spherical cow....". So yeah. Pointers here?

I also am small talk challenged. The point seems to be conversing without actually transfering any usefull information. As if it were talking for the sake of talking. Very strange indeed.

I don't see how you can not know how to small talk. That sort of social impotency is baffling.

The easiest way to do small talk with someone with interests divergent from your own is to, well, god-forbid, ask them QUESTIONS.

Oh, you're into surfing? Cool! Have you been doing it for a long time? ... No? How did you pick it up?

But what does their surfing have to do with anything?

This IS ATOT.

This reminds me of that one Computer Science class I took. Talk about social pariahs. That was freshman year...I was gonna minor in CS, because I like doing computer stuff, obviously. That one class stopped that in it's tracks. It's like a fvcking leper colony over there.

But what does their surfing have to do with anything?

Nothing. What does chatting about the weather have to do with anything? Or making fleeting comments about something that's happening around you? Nothing. It's all small talk. It doesn't have to go anywhere.

Conversations that don't go anywhere bother me.

It doesn't, just like your love of computers or the Tick doesn't have anything to do with anything. Humans are diverse creatures with diverses interests and one of the easiest ways to have a good conversation is to spend time learning about the interests of others It makes them feel like you value and appreciate their opinion and existence (which hopefully you do, but in either case it reassures them).

I sometimes wonder how any of you manage to exist outside of this freaking chat room.
