What do LCD screens use for backlighting?

Cold Cathode discharge lamps. Very similar to fluorsecent lighting. Newer solid state sources (from white LED's) are around the corner. These operate much cooler and with lower power consumption plus have a 100k+ hour MTBF! 🙂
