The transaction has been resolved.

--------------------------

I bought a football jersey for a friend who was going into surgery for $35.

Among the other "Charges" were:

US Postal Service Media Mail: $12.00
USPS Airmail Parcel Post: $18.50
Insurance: $3.60

I finally got the package today after 3 weeks (and I'll let that go because he's shipping from the US to Canada and that can SOMETIMES be slow.

There are two things that are really pissing me off..

1. When I emailed the guy asking if he had a tracking number for the item (2 weeks after I paid), he didn't respond. Yesterday (after 3 weeks) I emailed him again asking for a tracking number because I had no yet received the jersey. I got a response saying "my part of this transaction was complete,as i will check on this matter immediately."

His part of the transaction is complete when that jersey is in my hands and not a second before.

2. The shipping only cost $4.23 (printed right on the USPS shipping label and there is no indication of any kind of insurance. He charged me $34.10 to ship and it only cost him $4. WTF is that?

I've never left a negative feedback for anyone but I know this guy will leave one for me as well simply because I left him one.

Man I'm angry.

u cant really complain about shipping charges if the auction clearly stated shipping costs before you bid. But yea, he deserves a neutral at best

How can you be scammed by giving out the tracking #?

I was wondering the same. How did he charge you for two different shipping methods? I am also wondering, did you have to enter the amount for shipping or was it automatically in the paypal total?

The reason I ask is because it sounds like you paid for two different methods of shipping and additional insurance.

just my .02

Yep, he clearly got charged for two different shipping methods.

Media mail can only be used for domestic shipping, and only to the lower 48 states.

Wow...the guy has some nerve trying to ship a jersey via media mail.

Why the hell was the OP dumb enough to pay twice for shipping?

First, you were in a tough situation and so I'm not just trying to pour salt on the wound...

His part of the transaction is complete when that jersey is in my hands and not a second before.

I forget the exact legal terminology, but the good is no longer in his control and so if he's shipped it to you, his part of the transaction is completed. There's more to it, but I don't have my book infront of me on this topic... basically, his part is complete once he's shipped it, IIRC.

While I would normally agree, I don't in this case because if that was the reason, the seller should have stated it.

This is exactly why I don't do business outside of reputable online organizations and very very close friends.

That's great; one less newbie eBay thread to worry about.

Seriously guys, this routine is getting old and tired.

When you bid on an eBay item, shipping charges are listed UPFRONT. In the extremely rare case they are not listed, ASK THE SELLER. By bidding on the item, YOU ARE AGREEING TO THE SHIPPING CHARGES. STFU if you have buyer's remorse later on.

The shipping only cost $4.23 (printed right on the USPS shipping label and there is no indication of any kind of insurance. He charged me $34.10 to ship and it only cost him $4. WTF is that?
Smart business practices? You do know that you can calculate actual shipping charges at http://www.usps.com

I'd definitely write him back and get a refund for the Media Mail at least. Also if there's no insurance on there you could try checking with the Post Office to see. Usually they put a little slip of paper on there with a certain color when you get extra services. If it wasn't shipped with insurance but you paid for insurance, then I'd get a refund for that too.

He basically charged you for a service he didn't provide (Media Mail). And he charged you for an Extra Feature that he didn't provide (Insurance). Contact him first and ask for a refund. If he refuses, then leave negative and contact eBay. At least it will be a warnign for others.

I disagree. His part of the transaction is complete when he ships the item. That is one of the reasons you get a tracking number - if the item gets lost in the mail, would you expect him to refund your money?

I think we need a link to the auction to see what was said about shipping before anyone can decide about this issue.

It's interesting that people hold eBay sellers to a lower standard than any other business - probably because many people are eBay sellers themselves, and they would never hold themselves to the same high standards to which they hold businesses.

The seller's part of the transaction did not end when he shipped the item, because the OP paid for insurance. And if the item is lost in transit, as he believed at the time that this may have been, then the seller has to file the insurance claim and refund the OP's money.

I think the shipping cost is irrelevant. Although it is clearly fee circumvention (which the OP could report to eBay separately from his feedback), the shipping cost was known. What is wrong is that the OP paid for insurance and the guy didn't insure the package. For that the OP deserves a refund of the insurance cost. If the guy agrees, he should get neutral feedback. If he refuses he should get a negative feedback.

But either way the OP has to expect a negative feedback in return.
