Thanks:

Don't bother. It's too risky and you won't see a huge performance gain. I've seen many a video card fried from OCing.

control panel--->display--->appearance tab--->effects button---->check box for "use the following method...." and choose clear type.

If you are intent on overclocking your video card, download and install Coolbits. It is a .reg file that adds an overclocking tab to the NV control panel. Just make sure to take it slowly, ensure you have decent cooling, and make sure to drop the final core and mem speeds by a little when your find your ceiling to keep things safe.

To test out the stability of your overclock, download and install RTHDRIBL. If your card can run that with no crashing or locking up you are golden.

Hi some1,

Another vote for don't bother to OC it.

Why? Although I usually run with EVERTHING OC'd, I see no need with my 6800GT as it stands now. This thing plays everything smooth as butter.

Caveat: If you're playing at very high resolution, you might be able to use a little extra power though. My monitor won't do anything above 12 x 10, so I can't tell personaly if it's needed.

I don't really care to mess with it anymore.

Might have been the tool I was using (ForeceWare) but I started to underclock my core and my temperatures kept creeping higher and higher and I was like "oh crap!" and brought it back to normal... temperatures started lowering. WTF

I'm one prime cantidate for anti-OCing. I used to OC everything I had, but recently I just broke my video card doing it and well I've learned my lesson. You don't get any noticeable gains at all, just shortens the life of your stuff and voids warranties, etc.

But if you really want to, the easiest way is to install Coolbits. Do this my going into regedit, HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE, SOFTWARE, NVIDIA Corp, Global, NVTweak. In the NVTweak folder, rightclick, new -> DWORD Value. Call it Coolbits. The right click it, Modify, set Value Data to 3, close out of regedit and reboot. In your NVidia display settings, there will be a new tab for clock frequency and such.

But again, I urge you not to OC your video card, it's very expensive and can break quite easily.

got a evga 6800gt for myself too,

it might be true for some that OC won't be much of difference..
well, it was to me.
having 2005fpw, i had to OC a little to make it smoother.

but I am sure, if i had lower res, i wouldn't need to OC

oh, btw, I only OC it when I play HL2

I did the automatic OC on my 6800GT just to see the difference in some benchmarks. Haven't done anything to it since, and it really makes hardly a difference when you're actually trying to play a gam.
