I want to bring my router to south america since the electronics are so expensive down here. What would I need to make it worth with the plugs and voltage down here? Thanks in advance.

Depends on which part of South America you're talking about. But either way, look at the fine print on the AC adapter. If it says something like 110-240V, it'll automatically adjust to the proper voltage, which means you'll only need a plug adapter to make the plug fit the wall. Otherwise you might need an actual converter, which is more expensive.

You need an adaptor to reverse the direction of the radio waves.

What kind of plugs do they use there? What voltage?

Also, check DingDingDao's post - it is in fact a piece of useful information. ;)

I thought you have to install it upside down?

If the voltage there is 220VAC then you can just find a 220-12V@1A or whatever adapter down there in someones junk pile.

bad advice!!! If it is the linksys model with 2 antennas... you just reverse the antennas and you are good to go.

I heard there was a forum called Networking specifically created to discuss such issues.

I think the entire South America is on 220.

[edit]

Humm, according to Techs's link, not so...

not really about netoworking is it? he is talking about power voltage, which is more suited to ATOT than network. He'll get murdered in networking asking about voltage.

Really? I heard there was this forum called 'Networking' at Anandtech where people could ask such questions.

Look at the power adapter to see what the output voltage is. If it is 12V or 5V , I suspect it is, then you could just tap a drive connector on a pc and use that or just buy a 12v or 5v wall adapter that supports 240v.

edit: Which part of South America, some of it uses the same power as USA.

This.
Just make sure to get the proper kind of output (DC or AC, most likely DC), proper connector size, and proper polarity of the output.

When you get there, just buy a new power adapter. Needs to have the right polarity (center positive or center ground) which will look something like - --(*-- + and the same output voltage, as well as being rated for the same or more amperage than the old one.

Make sure you check if you can use it legally. Different countries have different wifi frequencies.
