What do I need to know to make a site with a mashup of google maps.

I have no experience whatsoever when It comes to making webpages, I'd like to know what it would take to make a mashup map using google maps and a webpage. Would I have to learn HTML and Javascript? if so what would be the best way for a newbie to go about learning them and how long would it take?

Thank you very much, I don't know how I missed the online documentation at google's website though.
