my cars getting up there in age.. 1995 acura integra with 94000 miles on it.

im usually alittle late getting an oil change due to laziness so ive decided maybe i should just do it myself.

seems simple enough.

drain oil into oil pan and discard, replace oil filter, add oil..

am i missing something? other than the oil filter and oil, is there anything i should be getting?

what's some good brands for oil filters and oil? thnx

Its easier if you suck the old oil out of the same hole you put new oil in. Keeps you from having to climb undert the car and all that mess.

2. Drive your ass to Walmart
3. $20

A torque wrench would be good to have so you can torque the oil plug down correctly, otherwise all you really need is a socket set, drain pan, and funnel. I use Mobil 1 oil and Wix filters in my cars.

Explain "late". The owners manual for your car specifies oil change intervals of 7500 miles. The 3000 mile requirement is just marketing by oil companies (and good advice for car illiterates who never even check their oil, thus every 3000 keeps them properly and safely topped off, something they otherwise would not do).
I usually change with synthetic every 5000.

edit: and I use Valvoline SynPower 10W-30 with Valvoline oil filters (which is OEM), if anyone cares.

having a car that works for more than 60K miles....priceless

I tried it a couple times...decided it wasn't worth it...rather goto local place and get some quality oil and a quality job done for $30

Any oil analysis results from running 7500 versus 3000?
I msyelf do 5k changes on the truck and 10k on the car.

Huh, and I thought that I was one of the few that used synthetic oil. I use Mobil 1 every ~4000 miles.

One of my cars seems to be about 6" off the ground, so a set of ramps is nice.

ramps

I got some 8000 lb Gross Vehicle Weight ramps at Walmart for $20 (couldn't find them at walmart.com).

I'm sure I am overdue on my oil change. They forgot to put a sticker in the window. I'm sure I have the receipt with the old milage somewhere. Perhaps a task for this weekend.

you don't discard oil, u get it recycled. ask the trash peeps from ur county or whatever. don't forget to rub some oil on the filter seal, and put a little in there too. eh... some spouts and funnels make it a lot less icky

Yeah, I'm having difficulty figuring out how you could get a "high quality" oil change.

I didn't change the oil in my old engine for more then 10k after I planned out my swap;) Just added a bit;)

That said, don't use Fram filters. Bosch really aren't good anymore either. I'm not sure which ones to suggest. I won't use the OEM one Honda specs for my car since its now made by Fram.

anything other than a walmart oil change is quality...after seeing how some guys there mangled a friends car I'd never go there for an oil change...not one mechanic on duty was ASE certified...oil cap not screwed on properly...and just half assed there way through the job

It depends on the type of driving you do and the area you live in.

Do you;

Make short, frequent trips? Idle excessivly? Live in an extremely hot, cold or dusty environment?

Change your oil every 3750 miles.

Do you;

Drive for at least 20 minutes every time the car is started? Spend more time on the highway than in the city? Live in a moderate climate?

Change your oil every ~5000 miles.

If you spend 85%+ of your time on the highway and they aren't short trips, you can extend it to 7500 miles.
