make fun of him for a bit, talk about the dumb stuff you've done with him, then tell him how great he is and wish him luck

What ever you do, don't mention the great xes you had with his new wife. Especially do not let him know that it just happened.

I've been Best Man twice now. Traditionally, the Best Man speech is one of the highlights of the reception, thus it should contain plenty of humour, and should be at least 5 minutes in duration. This is your chance to embarass the groom in a fun way, sharing entertaining stories from the past.

I was a best man once.. my toast ended with..

"may all their ups and downs be in bed"

Everyone loved it.

Peace

My brother did one that had a great ending punchline. It was so good it pissed the maid of honor off that she had to follow him and make a toast also.

Not necessarily.

You want to express these primary things:

- Happiness that your best friend has found someone to spend his life with
- Good things about the groom
- Something good about the bride (limit this; don't steal the maid of honor's thunder)
- Anecdote or story
- Heartfelt toast (pull one out of any toasts / best man / wedding book at the bookstore, or be creative and make your own)

Can be any length as long as it's from the heart.

My toast was about 3 minutes for a friend's wedding, and it was enough to make all 200 people at the reception start bawling with joy. :) I just reminisced about how life passes us by so fast and how we used to horse around as little kids, then said how glad I was that he found such a great woman to be his wife, and also mentioned how nice and hospitable her family was.

Of course, the latter part was utter bullsh!t because her family was a bunch of alcoholic, dysfunctional freaks, and the happy couple is now divorced, but that's beside the point. Live for the moment. :D
