I purchased a 1.4GHz cpu from Newegg the other day and it's the RETAIL version. I am assuming the heatsink that comes with it is good enough? Also, do i need any of that thermal paste i see people talking about? which one should I get? Anything else I should know or get for this?

i wouldn't go with the stock heatsink. you can buy another hsf that will cool your cpu much better. there's no clear "best" hsf. you can go with a swiftech if you can afford it, or i recommend globalwin's. for thermal paste, go with artic silver 2.

If you are using it w/o overclocking the retail heatsink is fine. AMD won't distribute their space heaters with poor heatsinks ;)

But if you want to overclock at all I recommend something better like one of the two Swiftechs or a Taisol CGK760042.

As for thermal paste, the HS will have a TIM pad, which is what AMD recommends. Again it will get the job done at stock, but it won't keep your CPU super cool, and it's not really that good if you want to overclock. I'd get some AS2.

I won't be overclocking at all so is it necessary for me to get the arctic silver? Is there any risk by sticking with what amd provided or should i be safe?

No, the cooling AMD provides is suffecient as is for stock speeds.

I won't take your CPU to the lowest possible temps, but it will be sufficient.
