What do I have to specify when buying Micron PC133 RAM?

Hi,

I'm ordering some Micron PC133 CAS3 RAM. Is there anything I should specify to the supplier, or is all Micron PC133 CAS3 the same?

First of all DON'T buy Micron CAS3 memory!! All "Micron" memory is generic/OEM. Buy Crucial memory if you want real Micron memory, and buy CAS2. The price difference between CAS2 and CAS3 is so small (about 3%, or $2.00 for 256MB), you'd be crazy to buy CAS3 on purpose.

you probably want unbuffered, not ecc, cas2
thats the best performing ram.

registered and ecc have there place, but not for the average home pc

There is no such thing--Micron and Infineon are competing memory chip makers. They both sell their memory chips to memory board makers, who produce the final modules. However, Crucial is the retail division of Micron, which gets the best Micron chips, obviously. So Crucial is retail Micron memory. Crucial is the only example of a chip maker also producing modules.

One more note: I didn't mean that there is no retail memory using Micron memory chips. I meant that there is no such thing as retail memory called "Micron". Micron's only retail product is Crucial memory. If memory is advertised as "Micron" memory, it is memory produced by another company using Micron chips. And if that other company is not named, you know it is generic.

What that means is that they have modules from both Micron and Infineon which fit that category.

Look for D7E at the end of the part number, that's cas 2 ram.
