i'm in Los Angeles

the guy wants overnight via USPS to Toronto, Canada.

Is there anything specific that I have to do, other than slap on the to/from labels?

thanks guys.

First, you'll have to fill out a customs declaration.

Second, as I understand it, the "overnight" shipping ends once it hits the Canadian border. Once it gets to the border, you lose all confirmation of delivery, tracking, etc.

Simce I'm in the US and can't be arrested....I think....and avoiding the tarrif in Canada is a National Pastime...put 'GIFT' on the shipping carton. Other than that, the USPS will set you up....er...I mean ship it out...;)

smallest possible well padded box you can find.
IE; dont send CD caddies in a box that could fit a HD

Viper GTS is, unfortunately, quite correct. When I sent a package from my home (Tulsa, Oklahoma, USA) to my sweetie dennilfloss in Ottawa, Ontario by USPS Priority Air Mail, it took eight days to arrive. That's some mighty slow airplanes, folks. Pony Express would have been faster.

Also, when you fill out the customs declaration be sure to stipulate a value of less than $50. Otherwise the recipient winds up paying a huge tariff.

You may need to declare a value... even if it is truly a gift.

I sent something to Canada and listed the value as: no value
Canada customs called me up and said I needed to declare something for the value. They wouldn't deliver it without one. I told them one dollar.

1) Send USPS (not UPS, FedEx, etc)
2) Value package under $50 USD (approx.) (Dont be an idiot and value a huge box at $5....ie. dont send a 19" monitor, and say its worth $50)
3) Send using Airmal (not surface mail, or third-class mail)
4) On the customs forms/green sticker you get, check off box indicating package is a GIFT, and write down value of merchandise
5) Write the word "GIFT" on the box using a thick red marker
6) When you say who its from, dont put a company name (esp important for UPS, but dont use them anyways)

That should be all...

Huey1124: Fragile = I'm a cardboard soccer ball that likes to be on the bottom of a shipping container full of boaling balls.

Ship to Canada? I just use the FedEx machine at the office. International Priority Overnight is sweet.

Windogg:

i suspected that, but hoped i was wrong. it's a shame that delivery people would purposely mistreat boxes just because words "fragile", or "glass" was written on it. is there a trick to shipping boxes so that it arrives to the destinations with minimal damage? (handling-wise) i used to write "fragile" on the box, so that the recipient will be happy to see that i took extra precautions with shipping. thanks.

It you ship FedEx or UPS, overnight to Toronto is not a problem. If you ship USPS and then it gets into the hands of Canada Post, expect at least 3 days. Toronto is unlike the rest of Canada when it comes to shipping. They tend to treat us like an American city and ship everything ASAP whereas if you ship to any other Canadian city it takes oh so long (maybe Vancouver or Montreal would be exceptions).

Use Fedex for overnight. Whatever you do, do not use UPS. Those
f#ckers charge an incredible brokering fee for shipments from the
U.S.. I once bought two videogames to the tune of $60 USD, and
was charged $76 CDN (or roughly $50 USD) for duty and brokering.
