What do i do with this thing?

Chuck it. I tried giving away some 486 parts to anyone who would pick it up and I got no takers. So unless you want a router/firewall, it's only other use would be an MP3 player.

I don't think that's a 486 - the chip looks a bit big to be a 486 chip. My guess - is it an early Pentium? P166-200?

If so, that would make a good stereo addition. Find a cheap case, old monitor, mouse, and keyboard, and 30GB hard drive, load it with a barebones OS, decent media player, and all the MP3s you can find, and connect it to the main stereo. Great for parties, and good for when drunk people at your place want to "download the thong song off the internet" but you don't want their clumsy ass to touch your good computer.

For more fun, add an NIC and network it to all the other PCs in your place. That way, you can access any song on anyone's computer at any time, through the stereo. We did this in my old house, it worked great. No fumbling with CDs at parties, just arrange some playlists and you're set for the entire night 😎

The Fan tells me it's a pentium.

It has edo ram but it also looks to have SDRAM slots. I am guessing it is a TX based MB with a p166.

Yep the board will support at least a P166 MMX... the heatsink near the top of the board was common on older boards that had to have a different voltage for the core and FSB (like MMX cpus did) and I recognize the NB and SB... I had an old board set up very similar to this for a P166MMX.

Could make a linux box if you don't already have one... I ran mine off this same hardware for the longest time.
 
The fact that it's a VX chipset (TX's usually came BGA, and none of the other 430 chipsets did SDRAM) is why I said use it as an MP3 player.
