What do I do? AMD upgraded my 2400 to a 2500

I RMA'd an XP2400+ (doa). Just got notified an XP2500+ is being sent in replacement. I bought the XP2400+ for my Soyo Dragon Ultra Patinum Edition mainboard (kt333), essentially for 133mhz bus processors. Now I am getting a 166mhz bus processor.

Is this going to work in my current board? I know that it will be stuck at the lower speeds. I can live with that for the time being. I don't have cash right now for new ram and mainboard. After the new year I can replace it.

I got the XP2400+ because it was the fastest available bargain that will work in my current mainboard. Now, I have a processor enroute that may or may not.

Don't laugh, this was all intended to replace a Duron 800@866mhz.

Not in this case. Soyo says the Bartons are "incompatible". I don't know if they mean they do not work at all or are unstable or don't work at rated speeds. the Dragon Ultra Platinum Edition tops out officially with the XP2600+ @266mhz FSB. My pet rock is more talkative than Soyo tech support. Believe me, I have tried to get a response from them months before this happened to the same question. I didn't expect AMD to change out the XP2400+ for an XP2500+. Even when I have good luck it is bad.

The Soyo board doesn't have the PCI/FSB bus lock choices. I have PC2100 DDR ram. 266mhz was the intended reason for purdhasing the XP2400 in the first place. If it does not work, I have to get a new mainboard and ram. I will be happy to use it as an underclocked CPU. I guess I will have to try it to find out.

BTW, this board shipped with the BIOS for the "Low Power" Athlon XP's. I had to flash one rev back to have a stable system. There is a newer BIOS that is for Applebreds, but I haven't bothered with it yet.

dont worry about it, run it at 12.5X133. get you 2200+ speeds. Then up the fsb a little bit. kt333 supports 266 mem, and 333 mem, not both 333. But try to go up anyway. Try it. The worst thing that could happen is you cant do mroe then 12.5X133.

by the way soyo probably wont ever claim "official" support
but most people with kt333 based motherboards can run bartons with no problem


also your motherboard has a 1/5th divider, so running it at 166mhz fsb will leave your pci and agp at 33 and 66mhz (so totally in spec)

just make sure you update to the newest bios first




and even if yoru not able to run a 166mhz fsb you can still just run it on a 133mhz fsb and increase the multiplier to get the same speed as your original cpu

when the kt333 was first released it didnt have "official" support for 166mhz fsb... but if i remember right some of the later revisions (ie. ce or cf) added official support of 166mhz fsb

i just checked soyo's web site and it looks like your board will support the barton xp2500+ (it also supports the xp3000+ barton)

but you will need to flash to the newest bios



and by the way which board do you have?? no such thing as an ultra plus
there is a kt333 dragon plus, and a kt333 dragon ultra

Its the Dragon Ultra "Platinum" Edition with the KT333 chipset. This is interesting because a couple of weeks ago, none of the Soyo boards with the KT333 had official support for the 166 mhz bus. Now, my board is the only one without it.

i used to have an old soyo dragon... happiest day of my life when i bought a new mobo..... whenever you get the money, go for it... you wont regret it =). Good luck let us know how it goes.


ps. Overclock the crap out of it... the only thing that u need to worry about is the mobo, cause the cpu can handle the oc.

yeah i noticed that too... pretty much sucks

but im guessing that it will still work alright as long as you have the latest bios

I misnamed the board in the original post. It is the Dragon Ultra Platinum Edition w/KT333. No cf. The XP2400+ was what I wanted for my existing mainboard and memory. AMD is shipping a 2500. Right now I will be happy if it works on the 133mhz bus. I can always shop for a new mainboard and memory later.

My calculations are that with the set multiplier I will be getting processor that runs at XP1700+ processor speed and a 512Kb cache. Pretty sad when everyone and their mothers are running their XP2500 Bartons at XP3200 speeds.

It will get me by until I can find a suitable new mainboard at the right price and the ram to go with it. This is going to replace my Duron 800@867mhz. The new version of Sandra gives it a zippy PR rating of 1150. I was mildly impressed.

Too bad the pencil that unlocked the Duron won't be of any help with the new Barton.

I would worry. It is not only frequency but voltage as well. I had put Barton into my Epox that did not recognize it and in the beginning everything nice and dandy until I notice that temperature does not get reported. After few days my hard drive corrupted all of a sudden and two out of three memory slots not working.
I pulled the Barton out and put my old Palomino 2000 back in and voila, everything nice as before. Thus I don't think it is just as easy as decreasing the clock.
I also notice that reboot does not work with "unknown" processor. So it is either bios update if possible or take a risk to loose your data or worse, losing hardware as well. :brokenheart:
