I was wondering what do employers actually check on a person when doing a background check?

Anyone know for certain what is checked?

credit check
criminal/civil check
employment history
education verification
verify references

I had all those for my current employer. I had all those and was finger-printed for the bar.

Not sure exactly what is checked. I know that TBI took out a billboard here advertising background checks for around $39 or so.

Google is my friend

From the link above, it can include:

Driving records
Vehicle registration
Credit records
Criminal records
Social Security no.
Education records
Court records
Workers' compensation
Bankruptcy
Character references
Neighbor interviews
Medical records
Property ownership
Military records
State licensing records
Drug test records
Past employers
Personal references
Incarceration records
Sex offender lists

Wouldn't they have to get approval to check credit specifically considering it will take a few points from it to do so?

I'd guess this varies from state to state but would also guess this is something that would no matter what have to be approved prior to being done right?

Standard, not government.

When we process pre-employment background checks, we usually check:

Credit
Driving history
Workers compensation
Criminal history
Education verification
Past employment verification

The consent form to do the background check, including the credit check, was in the employment application package. Inquiries only deduct points off your overall score if you have quite a few of them. Otherwise, one every couple of months should have no effect on your score, and you shouldn't be applying for credit more often than that anyway.

RKS' list is correct. That's what mine was like for my last job except I didn't have to be fingerprinted. You should be provided with a copy of the background check after it is completed.

It not only varies from state to state, but what is checked varies from employer to employer.

Regarding the need to get approval. Yes, companies need to get approval to do just about anything other than public records searches...however...this approval can easily be attached to your application, or it may be a separate page.

In my companies case, we simply have a disclaimer what we may check in the course of selection, right at the end of the application. By signing the application that applicant allows us to do criminal, civil, credit, and education background checks. It also allows us to contact references.

That's boring - I want to know what you don't want them to know.

I remember when I attained my "government security clearance". I'm MoD SC security cleared, and there wasn?t much I could hide from, lol. It took me one month for BC clearance and four months to get SC cleared
