I'm just wondering what is the main benefit doctors get from prescribing certain drugs for patients? Do the drug companies give them a cut?

Probably better reimbursement from insurance companies.

Drug company XYZ cuts a deal with insurance company ABC to carry their drug and make it the best option then they "work with" doctor's offices.

Its actually very very complicated.

The bottom line is they get fed better insurance plans, better reimbursement, better patient pools, etc.

^^ That's pretty much the industry standard.

Edit: Referring to GagHalfrunt's and and Humpy's posts.

Are the drug companies still hiring former cheerleaders as reps?

Pretty much they get a small cut, whether it's through insurance or w/e, end result is they get more money. It's one of those things that is a bit gray area and they don't really like to admit it. My dad was being prescribed a medication once, and doctor changed his mind half way through writing the script as an alternate drug must have popped in his head. My dad is like "oh, I guess you get more compensation for that one!". Doc did not like that lol.

The whole pharma industry is kinda corrupt though, and in the states, it's the whole medical industry. Health services should not be for profit.

Guess we're 0/2.

Where do you guys get this shit?

There are essentially potential 3 benefits. Free food from the drug rep in the office/at a restaurant if they provide an educational lecture about the drug. Free samples which can then be given to patients (it's weird, I rarely see people complaining about free samples). Lastly, if you're fancy enough, you can make speaking fees for giving lectures.

^ You have to read between the lines. This stuff tends to be kinda gray area so it's not really talked about, but it's inevitable that it happens.

This type of compensation is very common in pretty much all industries. Wonder why the CEO chose company B instead of company A for a project when clearly company A was the best choice? Yeah, that's why. That CEO is probably getting a new pool or another sports car after that contract is done. And a blow job. It's pretty much the only reason the company CGI still exists.

But overall, payments are widespread. Nationwide, nearly 9 in 10 cardiologists who wrote at least 1,000 prescriptions for Medicare patients received payments from a drug or device company in 2014, while 7 in 10 internists and family practitioners did.

So, 90% of cardiologists are "fancy enough"?

the govt cracked down hard on all this BS years ago, sure it still happens, but in general its not nearly as bad as people think it is

The problem is people generalize heavily, and that Chic-Fil-A lunch becomes synonymous with in bed with big pharma.

They used to bring in stuff like free VCR's to watch their videos with, now you can't even get a damn pen from them.

The reps all look like strippers though, male and female...
