What do dealerships do with total POS trade-ins?

That obviously can not be sold on their lot. Do they still make any profit on them through whole sale?

Say something like 1989 Sentra ( I randomly picked it) in good running conditions. Works as a car, but they prolly don't want to sell it on their lot unless its one of those exclusively low cost car stores in the projects.

They sell them to a wholesaler. That's what they've always told me. Of course they'll lament how they're taking a big loss, wha wha wha, but I doubt it.

They either sell them to a wholesaler, or they put them up for auction at regional car auctions.

QFT. The dealer once offered us $500 extra dollars for our trade if WE took our car to the auction ourselves. :confused: Considering that the auction house was only 20 miles from us, it was a great deal. Plus, it was interesting to spend the day at an auto auction.

I never heard of that happening though.

Yup thats where my POS cavalier ended up plus the govt gives the car dealers incentives for removing pollution bearing vehicles( over the norm) off the road...good old kickbacks

Some end up in the back of the lot. I got my Mustang like this. I went to a large Chevy dealer in the Lansing area, told them I had $200 (yes, two hundred dollars) to spend on a car that runs to drive in the winter.

They took me to a back area of their lot, where there were a whole bunch of beaters that could only have been junky trade-ins. I found my 92 Stang, drove it around the lot to make sure it ran, gave them my $200, and I was out of there. They wanted it off their lot, I needed a cheap car. Everyone wins.

FWIW, that was 3.5 years ago. The car had 42k original miles when I got it. I still have that car, and it still runs great.

It's a 4 cyl automatic. I've gotten 33+ mpg on long trips. It usually gets about 25-28 around town.

Some lots keep some a few for situations like black88gta had.

Some sale them at auctions, or have used car lots they sale them on, or just junk them.

They either sell them two wholsalers, or some dealers have a separate "Budget Lot" a few blocks away from their main lot where they keep the low-dollar used cars.

One of the local lots here seems to keep all of the trade-ins they get for about a month and try to sell them cheaply before shipping them off to auction...
Let me tell you there were some sad looking cars back there, windows busted out, missing body panels, rusted to hell, big dents, you name it...
occasionaly you will find a gem, or at least a polsihed stone like I did got a 93 Ford Tempo that Ran, Drove and was registered and inspected. It needed some work but it was worth the money I paid for it.
