What do Bechmarks indicate?

Ok, I read benchmark results comparing different CPUs etc, but with no context or understanding. I have not idea what Cinebench, 3D pass mark measure etc. I started to wonder which one is more applicable to different computer functions -Gaming and running programs in general.

Better reviews will go into depth a bit on which benchmarks benefit certain types of tasks.
Keep reading until you find reviewers that go into that type of depth.

Benchmarks indicate the performance of a cpu on the kind of software they are written with.

There are two kinds of benches, cinebench is a multithreaded/multicore benchmark that can get every core of any cpu up to 100% and also uses a fair amount of fpu instructions.

The second kind is stuff like superpi that only runs on a single core.

Neither one is representative for games and general programs because there are only niche ones that have that kind of extreme behavior, almost every software nowadays is a mix of both worlds they have one thread that needs speed but they will also have several other threads running at the same time.
