What do Atheists, Christmas, Seinfeld, O'Reilly, and Westboro have in common?

OLYMPIA: Church known for anti-gay stance wants to join displays at Capitol
THE NEWS TRIBUNE
Published: December 11th, 2008 12:05 AM

A Kansas-based church that has blamed deaths in Iraq on U.S. tolerance of homosexuality has asked Gov. Chris Gregoire?s office to approve a ?Santa Claus will take you to hell? message to display among other religious statements in the state Capitol.

The Westboro Baptist Church?s message would join a Nativity set, three signs mocking atheism, and an atheists? sign that celebrates the winter solstice while also taking a shot at religion as ?myth and superstition? that enslaves minds, all in the state Capitol?s third-floor hallway.

The Westboro request is under consideration by the state Department of General Administration, which also has a request for a display depicting ?The Spaghetti Monster? and from ?a Christian woman in Bellevue who wants to erect a sign offering blessings on all people.?

Also under consideration is a request for a Festivus pole, a reference to the mock holiday ?Festivus for the Rest of Us? popularized by the ?Seinfeld? sitcom in the late 1990s.

Here?s a snippet of Westboro?s proposed message, according to the Spokesman-Review in Spokane: ?You?d better watch out, get ready to cry, You?d better go hide, I?m telling you why: ?cuz Santa Claus will take you to hell. He is your favorite idol, you worship at his feet, but when you stand before your God he won?t help you take the heat.?

This is just ridiculous. How embarrassing.

I'm all for the atheists having the sign up, but the content on the sign shouldn't have been demeaning to other people and religions.

I kinda like the Festivus Pole... but really, really? Can our dumbass governor really think this is a good idea.

Now we know why places choose to make displays religion neutral, instead of allowing all religions, when faced with that choice.

Or make no displays at all. I remember teachers in high school complain that people complained about a christmas tree.

That too. Although if you simply called it a "holiday tree" instead, you'd be fine.

When you put a baby in a manger, that's when simply renaming it gets tough.

Does the Spaghetti monster have a holiday in Dec? If so, fine, put the stupid thing up. If not they get told to screw off. The atheists can celebrate their winter solstice all they want... but they can do it without being degrading to other peoples belief systems.

Holiday's don't need to be completely secularized so no one gets offended. I have zero problem with other religions celebrating their holidays and putting respectable things up in public squares, it's one of the great things about our country.

Nope, I'm pretty sure she is just as dumb. Although your governor has raised the bar pretty high.

Story says there were 3 signs mocking atheism. Why are you only criticizing the atheists and not the religous who put out the other signs?

I didn't think about that. Those shouldn't be up either. But to act like a 5 year old... THEY STARTED IT!

We don't really have a disagreement here. People should be able to express their beliefs without belittling others. I just found it odd that all your wrath was directed at the atheists. I'm not Christian, and I have no problem with Christmas displays. Of course, I was raised as a Christian so I still like the traditions.

I'm more annoyed then offended about people celebrating holidays. Hell, I'm not offended at all. Do whatever your silly gods tell you, I just don't want to be bothered by it.

I disagree, religious groups and those claiming to serve the gods were torturing and murdering people for being "heathens" long before the atheist movements slaughtered people for being religious. Of course the reigning champ is still of course religious groups murdering members of other religious groups for not believing in exactly the same type of invisible deities.

So you mean to tell me Christians are in the wrong for something that happened thousands of years ago that we (collective) had absolutely nothing to do with?

Why don't you argue on the merits of the current case instead of bringing up your strawman BS and fringe crap. Don't turn this into a ridiculous argument over which radical group killed who first and why.

This is a simple debate over freedom of speech, it's limitations, and religion in public places.

Get yourself off chastising religion in another thread.

This is what happens when a government tries to get around separation of church and state by saying they're being neutral. They deserve it.

the pastafarian "holiday season" is equivalent to your Christmas. to celebrate we drink holy grog and have wenches. just the other day we all made holiday tree ornaments of his noodlyness. i made a holiday theme FSM with green and red pasta to compliment his large meatballs and eye stalks with little googly eyes, he even got a pair of copper wire glasses to make him look smarter.

Only the FSM's second holiest holiday, the feast of St. Marinara, celebrating his miraculous transmogrification of tomatoes into sauce, which lightly graced His Noodly Appendage, and provided sustenance for all.

Santa Claus will take you to hell? How is believing in Santa any different than believing in a god? This is what makes religion ironic.

The choice is to either put up a Festivus Pole, or do the right thing by letting O'Reilly "win". That's what makes this situation so funny.
