I was expecting the punchline to be something like: "There's a surprise/present for the little ones under each one."

 
here's a good joke for you:

Santa Claus was busy preparing for the christmas. In just few hours he was supposed to be flying around the world delivering present to children. But then he found out that the elves had gone os strike. They refused to make any toys or wrap them up. Things didn't look good. While thinking for a solution, Santa decided to make sure that his reindeers were OK... But someone had forgot to close the gates and they all had ran away! Santa was starting to get annoyed, but then he thought that Mrs. Santa could "comfort" him! No such luck! Mrs Santa had a headache. Santa was getting really angry. He decided that he needed a drink... Only to find out that the elves had drank all his booze! As Santas blood was boiling, he heard a faint knock on the door. As Santa opened the door he saw a tiny angel with a big christmas tree. The angel asked: "Where do you want me to put this christmas tree, Santa?"

And that, boys and girls, is how the angel ended up to the top of the christmas tree.
