what distributors do the damn small internet companies buy from?

sheesh. i've always noticed that the price i buy parts at (only for myself) at my distributor have always been about what online stores charge.
how in the world do they do that? i understand larger companies buying 1000's of items and getting huge discounts for them, but what about those small companies?
any idea what distributors they use?
