what direction does the cpu fan blow?

I'd never really thought about this before until i was wodnering why my cpu was runnig so cool as opposed to my friends, at first i just thought it some odd cooling with my weird modded 1997 toshiba case or the fact that my fan runs betwenb 5800-6000rpm. but my powersupply is in front of my cpu its positoned vertically. so if the cpu fan blows air in the direction opposite of the cpu the powersupply fan right in front of it would be helping it out?

also would it work if you mounted more fans to the heatsink like on the sides?

Depends on the heatsink you are using - some work best with the air flow toward the CPU, others away from the CPU and some work equally well either way. Experiment on your heatsink.
. There are even some crossflow rigs.

copper heatsinks need air to blow on them. copper is only efficient at dissapating heat when it is very well cooled.

Yup, copper can absorb more heat per cubic whatever than aluminum, but it doesn't shed it as easily.

the more fans the better. the cooler the hsf is, the more heat it can absorb. also, more fans will draw more air into the case.
