Hi fellow Anandtecher:

I'm looking to buy a digital camera obviously. Which one do you own and what's your experience with it? I'm leaning toward a Canon Powershot G1. What do you like/dislike about the G1 for those that has one?

Also, being an amateur photographer just starting out, do you have any website that gives info about digital photography?

I was thinking about getting a Sony Mavica FD85. Has anyone had a good/bad experience with one of these?

Could be posting MPEGs in ATOT soon,
~kitten :p

EDIT: or an FD83...

I have a G1 and I am very happy with it. Its got all the features! What suprised me the most is the battery life even when the display was on. It last a long time! What i don't like about it is that it is a little big compared to my old camera, my cannon S100. Still, i recommend the G1 if you have the money.

Depends on your price range. For lower priced models, the Fuji Finepix 1300 (~$175) or the Fuji Finepix 1400z (~$250) are really nice. 1.3mpix. The 1400z has a physical zoom, the 1300 has a digital.

I have a Toshiba PDR-M60 2.3 megapixel camera that takes fantastic pictures. It's also very easy to use. My Brother-in-Law has a Nikon CoolPix 950 (I think it's a 950), also 2.3 megapixel that also takes excellent shots.

Fuji FinePix 2400 for around $345 is a good value.
Canon PowerShot S10 for around $350 is a great value.
Nikon CoolPix 800 for around $415 offers the best image quality of the three, but for a little more money.

Forget those, get the G1! Need examples? Go here!

I got a powershot G1 about a month ago and i can say that it totally rocks, the pictures are amazing and the features are so plentiful on the camera you cna take a picture exactly as you want it. The battery life is great too, lasts for a long time. It also comes wiht 16Mb of flash which isnt alot butits more than most other cameras. The remote is a cool feature too, took some nice group shots with the camera hoooked up to the tv so we could all see before we took it. i looked at the G1 and the nikon 990, and the G1 just had some features over the 990, like the battery, it comes with a rechargable lithium ion battery. For the price i think its the best camera you can buy, if you are willing to shell out the 700 or so.

i recommend the digital camera you are able to afford........

do you have a printer that will print out 3.1 megapixels? most people don't you will always have the options of cropping your pix but will you really need something with that many megapixels..... if you are like me you would say hell yeah....

go for the big boys.... and click away

I have a Sony CD-1000, It is a 2.1 megapixel but looks like a lot more cause they don't have to compress the picture as much, It is the best camera I have owned to date, A 20X lens and I use a 2X on that for wild life, I like the ideal of pictures on a cd

I have the nikon coolpix 950, and its tight, except now, its acting up on me. Eats up my batteries, like in 5 mins, (i think its because they are old and used rechargables)

danny~!

yeah, the CD1000 is a sweet camera.

as for the camera, you have to consider several things, cost and functionality.

cost: it's a balance between a camera, batteries (and recharger), memory, supplies, and accessories.

functionality: OPTICS, you want optical zoom, but how much zoom can you afford? and digital zoom is nothing, you can just not use it, and just use photoshop to crop and enlarge, same difference.

my sister got me a sony cybershot 505v. it was around $800 online. i spent over $500 on batteries, memory, supplies and accessories.
