What difference can a board make?

Hi all,

Please accept my apologies for asking before I answer, but my hardware knowledge suddenly seems very limited in this forum!

Here's my spec:
Radeon 9800 pro
2500+ Barton @ 3200+ on a 400fsb
2 * 256 meg 3200 ram (cheap)
Asrock K7S8X-E Motherboard!!

And here's my predicament:

I am considering buying a better motherboard, something Nforce 2 based and overclockable, an Abit NF-7 perhaps. I've always been quite cynical about the ability of a quality mobo to seriously impact on the performance of a system - will upgrading the mobo make a noticable difference - particulary for playing a certain FPS which is rather popular at the moment:) I read in one of the stickys that 3D performance can vary between K7 chipsets, but by how much really? 10% more 3d marks?

Would I get more bang for buck by going for a 2800+ 64 Athlon and mobo - I've heard that a 2800+ 64 can outperform a 3200+ 32? Any advice at all here would be great.
Cheers.

NF2 board won't make any difference at same FSB.

2800+ A64 will slightly outperform Barton 3200+ in games but is not worth it unless you can overclock that 2800+ A64 to around 2.2 - 2.6 ghz IMO.
