What Died In My Rig?

Before I go ahead and take my rig apart, I was wondering if you guys can maybe tell me exactly what died or whats wrong in my rig (see below for specs). I was just browsing the forums, then i noticed that my cpu was slowly climbing to 40C (32-4C Idle). I didn't know why, so i closed all my windows and applications and noticed it remained steady at 40C. I checked the mobo temp and it was at 26C, and my hds all around 30C.

I rebooted and when i turned my computer back on, nothing happened. The Power LED, hdd activity, side fan and blue leds on the psu all went on, but the monitor did not display anything. I turned it off and turned it on again, only to have it turn itself off 3-5 seconds after. This happened twice then it would just turn on again, not doing anything.

I don't think the monitor just died, since the keyboard and mouse did not turn on either. If the cpu died i would assume that the mobo would tell me something like cpu failed. As of right now im leaning greatly towards the mobo itself, though nothing seemed wrong with it.

any input?

anyway to recap:
problem: sudden 40C idle
reboot: would not post or do anything, just turned on lights
reboot again: powers up then powers down in 5 seconds

Ouch... the only time I ever had someone have that happen to em it wasn't good... it was LCS!!!

(Leaky Cap Syndrome)

I hope for your sake it's not.

don't assume that from the name lol. it really doesn't seem like a psu problem, but ill swap in my antec 350w (minus powering some components) and see if it does anything

Well to test you MB just take everything out other than the CPU ..it should get posting errors ...if your CPU is bad you will get nothing other than the fans and the HDs powering up ..but no beeping and no video ..So my guess is either the MB or CPU most likely CPU AMD Cross ships for $25 so you could have new CPU next day if thats the problem...

With the symptoms presented, I would think that something is wrong with your CPU cooling (either the cooler has been jarred loose, or the fan is dead or running too slowly). Many motherboards will auto-shutdown if they do not detect a working CPU fan, and all will shut down if the CPU temperature gets too high (which can happen in just a few seconds without a cooler making good contact).

A bad PSU is possible, but usually that results in the system not booting at all, not starting up for five seconds and then shutting down. I would recommend replacing that crap PSU regardless if you care about your system, though.

Damage to the MB or video card is also a possibility, but I would check the CPU's HSF first.

do any of you guys know of a way for me to be able to check if its my cpu or mobo? i dont have a spare s939 board nor do i have a spare s939 a64

Yeah ..I don't think there really is a way ..When I spoke to Asus Tech ...he told me that without a working CPU the board won't post errors ...he told me to find a CPU or test my CPU in another board ...Yeah like I have a few of em lying around ... So I really don't think there is a way...you could RMA your CPU with AMD and have it expedited for $25 and you'll have it next day, at least you'll know your CPU is good...just don't forget to send the old cpu back

amd will probably not take my cpu since its an oem. theres a very limited warrantee on them which makes me unsure about it

oh and also technically you should be able to boot up a a8v without a cpu. all that it generally takes is some ram in the b1 slot.... i think lol

Uh, no. You're not getting anywhere without a CPU; what, pray tell, is going to run the BIOS' instructions?

You *might* get a beep code, if it has a hardwired mechanism to detect a missing CPU.

Maybe you shouldn't be screwing around inside your PC...

OEM should be 1 year warantee .... Not to sure about that board but When I called Asus Tech ...he said IT will Not Post or report errors without a working CPU...but that was for my board A8n-sli and my gigabye boards ...

My vote is also for the Power Supply.

An increase is CPU temp from 3?c to 40c doesn't indicate a problem with the CPU IMHO, The newcastle chips don't reach thermal shutdow til around 70-75c

It could however be the symptom of a dying power supply spiking the voltage

Swap out the PS and reset the CMOS jumper and see if it will boot.

That Antec350 is not enough for this board, you might get it running with that but upgrade ASAP

I really hope your $10 AR power supply hasn't toasted your new rig!

The Golden rule of bargain computer building.

"Skimp and save, and cut corners on anything EXCEPT THE POWER SUPPLY!!!

i was finally able to fix it though i never really found the problem.

it wasn't the memory (replaced and swapped), it wasn't the psu (replaced and swapped), and it wasn't the vid card (replaced and swapped). I had no real way of swapping out the cpu and mb, but for one reason or another i kept thinking it was the mb. I decided to clear the cmos and for some reason it just started working.

now im not sure what the problem was lol.

it's just that i dont understand what could have happened for me to have to clear the cmos. everything was running stable and the biggest adjustment i made was a 200mhz overclock :b. i've always figured this particular board to have a good enough bios that any problem would only require me to reboot, making clearing the cmos seem insignificant to me. ah well...

[can't shake the feeling that im being looked down on now :b]

LOL na its all good ...remember everyone was once in a similar situation ..at least you didn't fry your MB within the first 5 minutes of use...🙁
