Because ATOT is apparently My Blog™, this thread is here to share something useful you learned today! I'll start:

Did you know that you can use a laptop as a second screen WIRELESSLY?

So Windows has Casting built in (Win + K shortcut key), which lets you send the screen to a compatible projector or TV, kind of like Airplay on the iPhone. HOWEVER! I learned that you can install the optional Wireless Display feature. I was setting up one of my clients with a new triple-monitor PC & WFH laptop and he was like hey, can you setup my laptop as a fourth screen wirelessly? And I was like uh well there are HDMI capture cards, apps like Synergy, the Microsoft Wireless Adapter hardware, WiGig docks, etc. And he was like no you just cast to it for free, there's some little app from Microsoft. I was like dude WHAT! So, yeah, TIL:

Notes:

1. You can rename the target receiver
2. You can disable the "Ask to project to this PC" prompt
3. You can require a PIN
4. Enable "Allow mouse, keyboard, and other input from this device" to use the host PC to control the receiver's screen
5. You can extend or duplicate the screen from there!

So just snag an angled laptop stand & voila, insta-screen!

One of the most fun things about working in IT is learning great hidden features like this!

You can also bypass the "can't display protected content" with this trick:

Watch the second video above because you have to cycle the settings after you save it the first time:

I learned that I don't know where my install file is for my standalone version of MS Office Pro Plus 2016. I have a new laptop on order and I'd rather not pay for Office again, most annoying.

Edit: I found the install file on an old thumb drive. I suppose this means that I have to verify the install with Microsoft and I'm going to be told to get bent as I purchased the copy of Office for $15 under an employee home purchase program circa 2004 and MS has been providing free updates ever since.

Most of you all probably know this tip. In Windows 11 you know how you right-click something on your desktop and then have to click the "show more options" to get the full menu. You can get directly into that menu if you press shift+right click.

  1. Right-click the Start button and choose Windows Terminal.
  2. Copy the command from below, paste it into Windows Terminal Window, and press enter.
    1. reg.exe add "HKCU\Software\Classes\CLSID\{86ca1aa0-34aa-4e8b-a509-50c905bae2a2}\InprocServer32" /f /ve
  3. Restart File Explorer or your computer for the changes to take effect.
  4. You would see the Legacy Right Click Context menu by default.

Since this thread popped up, I've been struggling to think of what I've learned lately. Near as I can tell, I've been education free for awhile. My last lesson seared into my head, is don't underestimate the force of even smallish pieces of wood, and don't take shortcuts when dealing with it. Only cost ~$15k and a finger. I'm giving it to you cheaper.

Thanks for the tip :). It worked like a charm. This is going to make my life easier when I need to scan a file or folder with Malwarebytes.

It doesn't have all the options though, at least for what I often need to access the rest of the menu. I often use 'Send to' for moving music files to a flash drive. This method does not show my drives.

Did you know that you can make Yogurt in the Instant Pot AUTOMAGICALLY with just 2 ingredients?

I posted this in the other thread, but the basic idea is:

1. Pour some ultra-pasteurized Half & Half into whatever size mason jars you want (I use Quart)
2. Stir in a couple spoonfuls of plain yogurt to "seed" it (just needs active live cultures, so like Fage)
3. Click the Yogurt button on the Ip & set to 24 hours

Notes:

1. Half & Half is an average of 12% milkfat by weight, so it gets decently thick without straining!
2. Usually you have to boil the milk first to kill any competing bacteria, but because most half & half in America is ultra-pasteurized, that step can be skipped!
3. You can make yogurt bowls, froyo, smoothies, sauces, dips, etc. from that base!

Infinite yogurt hack!

This is what I see with the registry fix. I also don't see drives but I see a usb drive that I plugged in to test.
