I'm just curious. I'm getting a BA in Business Management soon, and honestly....I have no idea where it's going to take me. :)

So....for you college grads. What degree did you get and did you go into that field of study? Did it pay what you thought it would? Did it pay more? Did it pay less? And in the end....was it worth it?

I have a BSc in Computer Science, working as a Software Developer...

It pays what I thought it would, and was well worth it... I love my current job...

I have a B.S in Comp Sci. from UC San Diego. I've been working as a Software Developer for the last 3 years since i ve been out of college and even longer if you count internships.

I have no issues with my pay, i am very happy with it. Of course i want more, (who doesn't?) but if i didnt even get a single raise in the next 3-4 years i would still be satisified but i doubt that would happen.

I left my degree in the envelope it came with. In grad school now. I wish I had a job, but all the people I've talked to that have real jobs wished they were still in school. :D

why would you get a masters in EE and then goto law school? sounds like you are avoiding the real world. after you finish law school i suppose you are gonna skip the bar exam and go straight to med school, and then get your phd in EE right?

Give him a break, not everyone knows exactly what they want to do. Ass.

Well I was thinking about getting one of those JD/MBA type things :D

I'm actually thinking about going into patent law, which requires you to have an engineering or science background. Having a Masters degree really elevates your status. Tons of patent lawyers have an MS or even a PhD. I think most biological/chemistry type patent lawyers really require PhDs. EEs going into patent law are one of the most sought-after graduates. My concentration happens to be one of the most "patented" areas of any industry, there's a huge demand, and I'm genuinely interested in the area, so why not go in there?

It's a long and hard road, but in the end, hopefully it'll pay off!

It's ok, most people usually saysthe same thing when they hear that someone that's studying engineering, especially one getting a graduate degree, is thinking of going to law school :) Patent lawyers aren't exactly the most popular people around!

One thing I learned about college after I have started working is that education is overrated.

Many of my colleagues are college drop outs (one dropped out of a community college) and they are making six figures.

Skills and experience are far more crucial IMHO.

BA in Film

Wasn't worth it at all. Waste of money. Should've just moved out west and started working. I learned more in a year here than I did the entire time I was in school.

BS Computer Science June 2001.
Software Developer since March 2001.

When I started studying CS in 1999, I figured I'd be making 80k by this time.
But after seeing the bubble burst, then after Intel called 2 weeks after my interview in January of 2001 to tell me they had a hiring freeze and wouldn't be offering anyone jobs, I figured I'd be lucky to be making 30k.

I'm currently about half way between those two figures, so considering the way the job market has been, I'm pretty satisfied.

Yes, it was worth it. Before I got my degree, my jobs had been: Catering, Pizza, Janitorial, Apartment maintenance. They all paid close to minimum wage. So even though I'm 60k in debt after 10 years of off and on part-time/full-time college and two degrees, I figure I've already just about made up the difference in salary. Not to mention, I enjoy my job now instead of dreading going to work.
