So I was walking to my car in the Savers parking lot (largely empty) when an out-of-state Suburban comes barreling through right in front of me, and then stops. The driver shouts at me something along the lines above "Hey bro, need any work done on your car? Scratches, dings, whatever, you name it, we'll take care of it, and we're giving out free samples!" I said no thanks and they promptly took off. They were both fairly pale skinny Italian-wannabe types, both in wife beaters and gold chains and shit with a bit of a Boston accent (not endemic to this area), and had rather dark circles around the eyes if that helps to describe things.

I think they just wanted to know why you were going to such a sh!tty store like Savers when Goodwill is 10x better and much cheaper.

I'm in it 95% for used CDs, 4% for used video games, and 1% for potential electronics interest, and in those categories the closest Savers here is the same price and with a much larger selection. I'm sure it depends on the area, because other Savers range from better selection but more $$$ to total junk and smelly but cheaper.

Money. ...and whatever else they could talk you out of.

You mean robbery, or do you think they were actually going to try and do some half-assed car touch-up on the spot and then extort the money out of me? Well, same result either way...

If they had wanted to rob or otherwise do harm to your pasty ass, they would have. They weren't, so they didn't. Please admit this obvious fact to yourself.

Face it, you over-dramatized an otherwise mundane encounter with two guys not wearing suits who saw you ambling towards your rusted and dented AMC Pacer and spontaneously tried to drum up some off-the-cuff auto repair business, only to leave when they saw that spreading yellow stain they'd inadvertently frightened you. D:

Now, in your mind, you have a reinforcd reason to never leave your basement lair again!

I drive a pimping Mazda Miata and would sooner let them take my hypothetical new born son than harm it. I don't see such extortion as 0roo0roo suggested being unlikely. Especially because of the Boston accents.

Anything's possible, I wasn't there. But you should know, which I suspect you might not, that this has long been a not uncommon legitimate free-lance practice -- earning spot cash by approaching likely customers right on the street with such an offer.

Legitimate guys like this have the tools and the expertise right with them to make a quick $100 or so. I've been so approached before, back in the day, specifically by a couple of Mexicans in a pick-up truck on the streets of SF.

I was not scared. I declined the offer. That was that. I'm sure the level of skill can and does vary, but I do know of at least one guy who accepted such an offer and was pleased with the outcome. Just saying.

I can agree with that to an extent; I know one time I saw an older Hispanic dude with a van filled with cleaning equipment and hoses and stuff in the back, just chilling in a chair with a lot of sudsy water on the ground around him. I'd trust that dude. These guys were just like "BAM, free samples?" and then took off.
