the government didn't hold your hand, tell you a bedtime story and pay you because they felt sorry for you.

You got your ass out of bed, and you found a new job.

Bah to all this neo-con bullshit.

I work my ass off and have since I was 14. I've been laid off before, most horribly right after 9/11 - they shipped out my entire center and there was very little work to be found in NYC. Unemployment, something I paid in to, helped me survive the 3 months it took me to find a job.

You lost your house, your wife took the kids and went to live with her Mom and you started drinking heavily and walked around the streets begging for money for booze.

The point is that before all this unemployment, welfare, socialist bullshit started, you were able to save your money how you saw fit. 3 months is understandable. The problem today is the people living their whole lives on the money that we are paying into the government.

I get really pissed about this...

Yea, so instead of saving the money that you were "paying into" the government for "just in case" unemployment, you are mandated to pay it. What happens if you don't get laid off, for years? Hell, what if you never get laid off because you work for someone awesome like Honda? What if the only time you'd ever leave would be for another job?

The point is, all that money could of been money you kept and managed yourself. Making it a completely moot point, because then you'd have something if/when you got laid off.

Bah to all this socialist bullshit. I can manage my own money and my own life - I don't need the government to hold my hand and tell me where to shit.

I'm beginning to agree more and more with this. I made mistakes when I was younger about running up debt, but now I'm paying the price and paying it down, and I learned something from it. ING Direct is amazing for savings, but time and time again I try to ask my friends to start an account, even with $5/week, and they say no. To me, I think they are dumb and a half. People should be responsible for their own savings.

What does that make me? Am I not liberal anymore?

Well, in the 1930s, during the great depression, when close to 30% of the population lost their jobs due to the collapse of the economy. The numbers that I've seen seem to indicate that around 7 million people were subject to starvation and starvation related disease. Millions went without running water. Disease ran rampant.

It's called unemployment INSURANCE. I'm amazed that people continue to confuse this with welfare or something. Auto INSURANCE is mandated by the government too. Would you deride someone for taking a "handout" from Geico if you ran into their car? Would you whine and rant about socialist agendas then too?

Unemployment insurance:
1. Your employer pays into fund.
2. If your employer cans you, you get money.

Auto insurance:
1. You pay into fund.
2. If you hit someone, they get money.

See?

I get really pissed about this...

Well, let's talk about unemployment - the maximum (in nyc at least) is six months. Even when I was on it for 3 months, I was nagged constantly by a local unemployment office to come in for resume prep work and to sign up for their job hunting service. I was a bit obnoxious and refused to, so they threatened my benefit (I refused because I knew how to write a stellar resume and viewed it as a waste of time). So I eventually went to the workshop and humored them. Then I had to check in weekly, letting them know my job search progress.

Finally, they told me if I didn't accept and find a job that paid 80% of my whole salary, they would suspend my benefits. Eventually I took a job that paid me less than 80% of my old salary because that's what had to be done in that economy... But it wasn't a free ride. Even if I did stall and use all 6 months, after 6 months I would be on my own.

Welfare is another story...

But I'm a believer that our government is so top heavy that we'd still get taxed out of everything, only our money would go into paying for $500 toilet seats instead of social services.
