What did people do before the invention of the toothbrush/toothpaste?

toothpaste doesnt actually serve that much of a purpose other than tasting good and assisting the toothbrush. you could brush your teeth with just water and not get cavities.

unless you grind your teeth. i remember reading in wired about engineering the bacteria in the mouth to prevent decay from happening. they did a few studies on rats and it worked perfectly. the only thing holding it back is they are just afraid of the side effects and passing it on to others. i am sure dentist don't think to much of it either.
