what did I mess up?

Good evening everyone. I was trying to load a new seagate harddrive into my Bros computer and his sytem just froze. Gave an eroor message of disk failure install os disk ang hit enter.
His old drive was a wd 20gb hd. Tried to run his sytem with either hd and I still get the same message.
Please help.

first clear cmos, next insert the new drive that you want, and set in bios to boot from cd first, do you know how to run fdisk from here?

I'll try that. For what it's worth, wehn I was trying to boot it up, it hangs and I can't get the cd to work. I'll let you guys know if it works.
