What did I disable (WinXP workstation service)

I had a problem of WinXP Pro freezing for some time after logging in. OE and IE would not work and NAV wouldn't load. After about a minute or so things turned normal. After going through net in search of help I read a recommendation to disable workstation service. I disabled and now everything seems to work like it should. Now I'm just wondering what exactly I disabled and will I miss it at some point?

if your not on a LAN I dont think you'll run into issues... if you were though you'll have problems authenticating and stuff to other machines/servers

I am having that same problem you just described. I'll try disabling it to see if it helps. The following is the description of the workstation service:

Creates and maintains client network connections to remote servers. If this service is stopped, these connections will be unavailable. If this service is disabled, any services that explicitly depend on it will fail to start.

EDIT: Yep it fixed the problem for me! No problems as of yet from disabling the service.
