I believe it was the Origin of Species, a book, that made him so famous. He basically laid out a theory of evolution. I could be wrong though. haven't had a Bio class in a while

Actually, the Darwin awards came first. Charles (at the time Davis) read them and adapted the stories of stupid peopel dying to animal speciation. In addition, he was so moved by the stories that he changed his last name.

I knew who he was. I knew he believed in evolution. I just didn't know why Stupid acts were considered darwin awards. I though his theory was natural selection.

The thought behind the awards is that they're survival of the fittest in action. People who lose their lives or lose the ability to reproduce because of an act of great stupidity are doing the race a favor by skimming their genes out of the pool.
