Well it depends on the type of camera she/he purchased. If it is analogue you will need a capture card
If it is a digital camera all you will need is a IEEE 1394 (firewire) cable and port on your computer then you are ready to go. Some authoring sofware like Adobe Premier or
Pinnacle Studio Plus version 9
Would help alot. sony has some thing called i.link on their camcorders (if that is what you have) and that is their name for firewire or iee1394.
If you have an analogue camera you will need a capture card, here are some reccomedations:
Plextor ConvertX
The Plextor is USB, and USB is not considerd to be the best option for converting video to the PC.
Here is a better 1394 Based Hardware solution and is on sale for $175 with Software included.

The best option would be a capture card that plugged directly in to the PCI bus.

The "sv out" on your camera is most likely a S-Video Ouput and Looks Like this
