I know there has been alot of talk about what computer related degrees are the best as of lately, and thats why I hate to even start another topic about it but... With all those recent threads I've went from being about 75% sure that I'm in the right degree program to about 40%.

In the future I'd like to be a unix/network hardware sysadmin. I really don't care for NT or novell although I've dabbled with them both. Right not my strongest skills are with hardware, trouble shooting, building some blazing systems, etc. I can use unix-ish systems pretty well I think too, although I will admit I don't know everthing there.....yet :)

At first I was planning for a computer science degree, even though the programming doesn't sound fun, I like it better than the math requirements of computer engineering. Well those math requirement of CS are even starting to get to me (I suck at math so very bad...I have no idea why either). Is there a better program out there for me? MIS/CIS (whatever it is called around your area...the accounting/managerial/computer training) programs are usually looked down upon here with the fairly ignorant kids taking those. From what I've seen those jobs are mostly tech like and pay like $40k MAX. What do you think I should go for? Have I left out a good degree?
Thanks guys(and gals)! :)

My roommate is a CS major and had to take the same maths as me (I'm an EE major) the first year of school, then different ones the second. Ended up, he had 5 math classes, I have 6. Mind you, this was on the quarter system, so don't get too scare. I think if you do any degree in the computer field you should be fairly comfortable in math. Not just for the math classes themselves, but for other classes as well.

I hate math and science but decided on an engineering degree because I hate liberal arts even more. I did terrible in math in high school, didn't even make it up to Calculus. I hated all those math classes I had to take in college. Just do it to it. If nothing else, you'll be able to figure out the volume of a paraboliod intersected by a sphere and impress some chicks at parties ;)

I work with a number of MIS majors, and they just end up being QA people at companies.

CS is a good degree, and I believe it takes more logic than math skills. But, different schools have different programs with different requirements, so I could be completely wrong.

I have never heard of a school that has a UNIX sys admin degree. :) I know that Berkeley has some kind of classes for something roughly akin to certification in UNIX admin.

Anyhow, why not just get a MIS degree BUT get a some Sun certs and a Red Hat cert to boot? That would easily mean a good paying job. I know a couple sys admins that work through a company called Taos Mountain doing Sun and RH admin stuff. They easily make over a 100k$ per year.

I go to Georgia Tech and am a CS major. To me it sounds like you would fit in with the Computer Engineering program here. It is akin to the EE field yet is quite different as well. I'm not too sure about the math requirements. If you want I'll dig up my course catalog and let you know.
