What Darwin Never Knew on Nova tonite

Earth teems with a staggering variety of animals, including 9,000 kinds of birds, 28,000 types of fish, and more than 350,000 species of beetles. What explains this explosion of living creatures—1.4 million different species discovered so far, with perhaps another 50 million to go? The source of life's endless forms was a profound mystery until Charles Darwin brought forth his revolutionary idea of natural selection. But Darwin's radical insights raised as many questions as they answered. What actually drives evolution and turns one species into another? To what degree do different animals rely on the same genetic toolkit? And how did we evolve?

"What Darwin Never Knew" offers answers to riddles that Darwin couldn't explain. Breakthroughs in a brand-new science—nicknamed "evo devo"—are linking the enigmas of evolution to another of nature's great mysteries, the development of the embryo. NOVA takes viewers on a journey from the Galapagos Islands to the Arctic, and from the explosion of animal forms half a billion years ago to the research labs of today. Scientists are finally beginning to crack nature's biggest secrets at the genetic level. The results are confirming the brilliance of Darwin's insights while revealing clues to life's breathtaking diversity in ways the great naturalist could scarcely have imagined.

Good episode. Too bad the trolls quickly derailed any attempt at serious scientific discussion in this thread with their adolescent and unscientific anti-religion agenda.

I think the episode would have been better named "What science 20 years ago didn't know."

I found the show to be absolutely fascinating. It expanded on a number of things I already had some knowledge of and had some new (to me) information as well. The idea that there are people now working on statistical analysis of DNA is really something. I can see how it may lead to further discoveries in the near future, possibly some great ones.

I've always followed the research into DNA switches with great interest and was glad to see so much time devoted to that area. One day soon we may be able to flip them at will, not only curing defects, but possibly advancing our own evolution through manual selection.

Is manual selection giving nature a hand?

Religion is scientific? I was under the impression that Religion was based on "faith" i.e. believing in shit someone else tells you to believe in.

Yup!

But rather than natural selection, we'll pick and chose. I just hope we're smart enough to do an "intelligent design". lol

He did that right after he made a rock so big he couldn't lift it?

You know, smart people should understand that and not use it as a disproof.

It's CLASSIC science. Schroedinger's Cat and what not.

As long as he doesn't SEE the interaction between his arms and the rock, he is both in possession of a rock so heavy he can't lift it and lifting said rock.

:D

What gets me is how do we know evolution was not Gods way of doing it.
Who says God played magic tricks like "poof"... man. Or "poof"... earth. Or "poof"... fish.
Maybe, just maybe it all fits together hand in hand. God made man, and thus the ape reformed or morphed into human form via Gods word. An animal morphed by God into human, blessed with intelligence. Who says God had to be some lame Vegas magic show act??? Maybe evolution is true, and was Gods preferred method for creation? Fish into animal, animal into man. I mean really... seven days is not necessarily 7 earth days. Back during creation there were no "days" as yet, so maybe "days" in God terms was a span of evolution events initiated by God. I think evolution and creation goes hand in hand. Man just wrote and interrupt how it went so his little mind can grasp the whole idea. Making man from dust may have started with the ape, originally made of dust also, then morphed into man over thousand-millions-billions of years. Its not like God was on the clock or had to punch in-out to full fill some time frame. Considering all in creation above and below, what is a few billion years to a God? Pocket change...

Because the bible tells us so. How dare you re-interpret your own truth from the word of God! IT is infallible and a true testament to science for all ages! It speaks the truth with every word, every syllable, every nuance. To take your own interpretation is blasphemy, sacrilege, and damning! Repent oh ye sinner, I say REPENT!

In all seriousness, the fact you are trying to pick apart what was written in a fairy tell book to make a story fit with every new fact science reveals which is counter to the bible is laughable. Do what you will, but when you claim the world if full of only apples and someone finds orange, don't try to call it an apple with a different color.

In another 20 years we will have this same discussion... only this time scientists proving that a plane on a treadmill will not take off.

Hopefully the trolls will have moved on so we can have a serious discussion.
