they are completely different motors, for example the euro motor has 6 individual throttle bodies, and the us spec only has 1. there are a lot of differences, which makes them different motors entirely. the only way the us spec m3 can compete with the euro spec is through forced induction. u could swap in a euro motor and tranny, but that costs a LOT. that same money could be used to turbo ur m3 and make it way faster than the euro m3.

Hmm, is that for both the 3.0 and 3.2 models? I've not seen a 3.0 modded, but have seen a late E36 with the 3.2 and a bunch of Dinan mods that was running really really strong, wasn't turbo or SC yet at the time.

both 3 and 3.2L.

the 3.2 with bolt ons can run strong, u will be able to hit about 240whp, which isnt bad. but to compete with its euro counterpart which will have about 272whp stock, ur gonna have to do some work like forced induction. iirc u can get around 270whp from a US spec 3.2 with full bolt ons, cams, etc. without going FI

Ah interesting, too bad about the US spec ones, sounds like an awful lot of trouble now that the E46s are becoming more and more affordable. Is it mainly differences in the vanos system and head flow?

yeah and iirc the bottom end is different as well (it revs higher - these motors revving capabilities are limited by the bottom end and not by the head (too an extent), go figure). the reason we got the worse motor bc BMW assumed that Americans wouldnt pay the extra money for more quality, and thus the US spec E36 M3 motor was born. For forced induction the us-spec motor is better, just bc there is less equipment, which would also make it cheaper to mod.

the e46's are cool and all, but cost a pretty penny to make stupid fast.

Yeah I've seen some of the Dinan kits (assuming they're one of the better houses for BMW go-fast goodies as their warranties are pretty solid sounding), and the prices are breathtaking in many cases. Pay to play I guess.

indeed, pay to play. dinan is expensive to say the least, but they are reputable. if u want to save a lot of money, just research parts and buy them from various companies. there so much info available online and on forums, that u dont have to try anything, everything has already been done, just buy and install.

if u really want to loose ur breath, check out Horsepower Freaks. its pricey but they say the cars run like they came turbo'd from the factory
